Sometimes a great collaboration begins very simply – with a conversation and a shared vision. That’s exactly how it was with Solmate. The brand came to us with a clear idea of what their swimwear should be, and we at Schneiderei CANN turned that idea into real, handmade products.

The result: over 1,000 finished pieces, two complete collections in 2025 – and a continuation that carries on into 2026 as well. For us, this is not ordinary production. It is joint design work, where functionality meets aesthetics and every piece is created to truly fit real body shapes.

Swimwear manufacturer for brands – why did Solmate choose exactly us?

The collaboration with the Solmate brand began with a detailed discussion about what the client needed – and already at this stage it was clear that this would not be a standard production order. Solmate already had a clear vision of what the final result should look like. However, the brand needed a partner who could translate that vision into a real, refined product. At CANN Sewing Workshop, we treat every order like our own project – from the first sketch to the finished piece.

Our pattern maker made sure that every cut not only looked good on paper but also fit perfectly on different body types – which is especially demanding when it comes to swimwear. Our production manager took care of smooth communication and adherence to the schedule.

Producing swimwear in small quantities – two collections, two different challenges

The first collection was based on patterns that Solmate already owned. Sounds simple – but the devil is in the details. The existing patterns didn’t meet all of the clients’ requirements, so our task was to improve them: incorporating precise corrections, adjusting proportions, and sewing new, improved templates. A small correction in elastic materials can make the difference between a piece that fits perfectly and one that causes problems. That’s why this phase required particular care and technical experience.

The second collection is a completely different story. We developed the “Multiway” project from scratch, based solely on the client’s specifications. The main task? Constructing a bikini top that can be worn in at least several different ways – by changing the strap position, the tying method, or the direction it’s worn. This multifunctional approach reflects current swimwear trends, where versatility, comfort, and adaptable designs are becoming increasingly important. Along with that, bikini bottoms (i.e. briefs) with a split size grading system that fit different body types without customers needing to order several separate sizes. That sounds like a marketing promise – but with us it became a technical reality.

Sewing bikinis and swimsuits – challenges of working with elastic fabrics

Working with elastic materials is a completely different world compared to classic clothing. Every stretch fabric for sportswear behaves differently – it’s cut differently, sewn differently, and reacts differently to time and use. With swimwear, there’s also contact with water, salt, chlorine and sun, which places very high demands on materials and workmanship.
One of the decisive elements for the quality of a swimsuit is the choice of the right elastic bands. An elastic band that’s too stiff presses in and leaves marks.

One that’s too soft doesn’t hold its shape and doesn’t provide sufficient support. At Schneiderei CANN, we have comprehensive knowledge of the available processing materials and select them specifically for each project, body type, and intended use of the garment. For Solmate’s collections, we tested several variants before finding the ideal solution for each model.

Another challenge is construction precision – with swimwear, every millimeter counts. If a pattern is one centimeter too wide in the bust area, the piece loses its shape. If the bikini bottom pattern is half a centimeter too deep, the silhouette changes. That’s why every project goes through detailed fittings and corrections before moving into series production.
